FIBRES & MATERIALS

We use a selection of high-quality fibres and materials to create functional garments with a modern tailored fit and comfortable wear. This is a guide to those fibres and materials that might need a bit of extra introduction.

LYOCELL

Lyocell is a biodegradable cellulose fibre that is derived from raw hardwood. The fibres are generated when hardwood is dissolved through a chemical process into a pulp, and then placed under pressure. The solvent used in this process is non-toxic and kept in a closed loop system, in which 99% of the chemicals can be recovered, filtered and reused.

We use TENCEL™ lyocell, a high-quality brand of lyocell fibre from Lenzing, Austria. TENCEL™ is the world’s-leading supplier of lyocell and procures wood only from certified sustainable forestry.

Lyocell has exceptional qualities beyond just its sustainable form. The fabric is durable, extremely soft, and is quick-drying due to its excellent breathability and absorbency. It’s also less likely for colours to fade in a garment made from lyocell compared to materials, such as cotton, because of the fibrillar structure that enables improved dying.

MERINO WOOL

Wool is a natural and renewable fibre obtained predominantly from sheep. At Hajk we use soft merino wool from the merino sheep, produced in Australia and South America. We opt exclusively for non-mulesed wool.

Merino wool has some unique properties which are superior to any other fibres. Wool is dirt-, water- and stain- repellent as well as absorbent of odours. Because of this, wool is considered self-cleaning and tends to stay fresher for longer when compared with other fibres. Very often, hanging a garment made from merino wool is a good way to refresh it, rather than washing.

Merino wool is one of the most breathable fibres in the world. Merino wool can absorb large amounts of moisture vapour and quickly evaporate the same moisture away into the air. Merino wool is also a great insulator and respond actively to changes in a wearer’s body temperature. Owing to this, wool can help you to stay warm in cold temperature and cool when the weather is hot.

Fluorocarbon-free DWR-treatment

We use a DWR-treatment on the UTE pants to afford the fabric a water and dirt repellent surface hence increasing the lifespan and functionality of the pants.

There are different types of DWR-treatments, the most common of which are fluorocarbon DWRs. However, these treatments have been hardly criticised in recent time as they are known to contain chemicals which can cause damage to the environment, humans and animals. Because of this, we opt to use only fluorocarbon-free DRW-treatments in our clothing range. And of course, our Hajk Textile Waterproofing is free from fluorocarbons.

Fluorocarbon-free DWRs however may be less durable and need reproofing on a more regular basis. This is a trade-off we have consciously accepted for the good of the environment and the well-being of humans and animals. Knowing this, we recommend that you apply Hajk Textile Waterproofing, or similar fluorocarbon-free DWR, on the UTE pants after a handful of washes or adventures to sustain full repellence.
